Text | Excerpt from Page 477, a Biography on Henry Alexander Kale: H. A. Kale was born in Lincoln, now Catawba county, North Carolina, a son of Absalom and Sallie (Edwards) Kale. His father was born in Lincoln county, North Carolina, in 1806, and was a son of Elisha Kale, a native of the same county, and grandfather of Polser Kale, a native of Pennsylvania, of German descent. His mother was a native of Virginia, daughter of Nathaniel Edwards, who was of Scotch descent. She died in 1863, leaving nine children - Francis, Sidney, Mary, Julia, William, Henry A., Lucinda, Pinckney and Ruie. In 1865 the father married Mrs. Catherine Moore, and they have one child - Robert. H. A. Kale was reared in his native county, and served an apprenticeship at the carpenter's trade, at which he worked until the breaking out of the Civil War. In 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate army, a member of Company K, Eighth North Carolina regiment, and served with the Army of north Virginia. He participated in over fifty of the hardest-fought battles of the war, and was wounded but once at the battle of Charleston, South Carolina. He was captured at Roanoke Island, North Carolina, but was parolled in fifteen days. He was surrendered with General Joe E. Johnston at Greensboro, North Carolina. After the close of the war, he returned to his native county and resumed work at his trade, which he followed successfully a number of years. In 1861 he removed to Texas, where he has since worked at his trade, and has also engaged in farming. August 4, 1861, Mr. Kale married Catherine E., daughter of Solomon Lowder, of North Carolina, and they have seven children - Jonas, Minnie, Delia, Maggie D., Alice, Ellen and Dawson. | |
